You have probably heard a lot of people talking about krill oil and your first thought may be, “isn’t krill what whales eat?”

The short answer is that yes, krill are the main food source of whales but they can also be a healthy supplement for you as well.

Krill oil is full of omega-3 fatty acids that are also found in fish oil, as well as phospholipid-derived fatty acids. In addition, krill oil contains astaxanthin, which is a natural anti-oxidant.

Better for You Than Fish Oil

Fish oil gets more press because it is more available than krill oil, but krill oil definitely wins in the battle of which is better for your body.

In krill oil, most of the fatty acid is stored as phospholipids. This means that it is easier for your body to digest krill oil versus fish oil. Research has found that your body can absorb krill oil easier than oil from fish or even plants.

Rich in Antioxidants

Going back to anti-oxidants, these are highly important to protecting your cells from free radicals, which can cause cancer.

Free radicals form when your body oxidizes the air you breathe, the food you eat or environmental factors like smoke or radiation. Anti-oxidants can fight one free radical at a time but with krill oil and astaxanthin, there is the possibility of fighting several free radicals all at the same time.

Reduce Cholesterol and Improve Circulation

Heart health is tied to fatty acids and if you want to reduce cholesterol and improve circulation, krill oil is the way to go.

In a study of 113 volunteers, it was found that the benefits of krill oil were on the same level of the more-widely used fish oil.

Reduce Inflammation from Arthritisarthritis

If you suffer from arthritis, krill oil can reduce the inflammation and pain that comes from the condition.

In a study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, it was found that of the 90 people who took part, many found that krill oil not only reduced pain, it helped with stiffness, all within just one to two weeks.

Improve Your Memory

Having trouble remembering things? Krill oil can help with that too.

Research has found that low-levels of omega-3 can result in loss of memory and cognitive skills. By taking krill oil, which as we said is full of omega-3 oil, you can improve your brain function.

Early results on animals is showing that this is the case and researchers in Norway found that rats who were given krill oil supplements tended to do better on skills tests.

It was also found in the same study that krill oil produces positive impacts similar to that of antidepressants.

Reduce Wrinkles and Prevent Skin Cancer

Reduce wrinklesSkin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world, but krill oil can not only improve skin texture and reduce wrinkles, it can also help with skin cancer treatment and prevention.

In a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, it was found that because krill eat algae, the astaxanthin found in algae can actually protect rats from skin cancer.
